Every summer on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, something special happens on the water—an event rooted in gratitude, history, and the spirit of the sea. The Blessing of the Fleet in Biloxi is more than a local tradition. It’s a living legacy that connects generations of fishing families, their faith, and the Gulf they depend on.
Hosted by St. Michael Catholic Church, this annual celebration honors the hardworking men and women who make their living from the waters surrounding Biloxi. With roots dating back to the early 1920s, the event features a series of spiritual and cultural moments: a fisherman’s mass, a wreath-laying ceremony in memory of those lost at sea, and the iconic boat procession where vessels are blessed for a safe and bountiful season.
A Gulf Coast Tradition Captured in 60 Photographs
This year, I had the opportunity to document the Blessing of the Fleet in Biloxi through my lens. From shrimp boats draped in flowers and flags to families lining the docks in reverence, each moment told a story of pride, resilience, and deep connection to the water.
I’ve curated over 60 high-resolution images from the event, now available for viewing and purchase at the following link:
Whether you're looking to remember the day, celebrate Biloxi’s fishing culture, or find the perfect coastal print for your home or office, these images honor the beauty and spirit of this cherished event.
Keeping Tradition Alive
The Blessing of the Fleet in Biloxi isn’t just about boats—it’s about belief. It’s about the families who have weathered storms and seasons together, and the community that surrounds them in prayer and celebration. This tradition continues to serve as a reminder that even in a modern world, we are still guided by faith, family, and the sea.
If you’ve never experienced the Blessing of the Fleet for yourself, I highly recommend making the trip next year. And if you were there, I hope my photos help you relive it with fresh perspective.
Thank you to everyone who makes this event possible year after year.
